our
story.
A moment in time became a movement.
Love Your Neighbor Project began in May 2020 with one neighbor asking a simple question: How can I help?
As the pandemic spread and uncertainty grew, LYNP responded by helping neighbors stay safe, distributing over 2,000 masks and bottles of hand sanitizer throughout our community. But as the weeks unfolded, something became clear.
The greatest need wasn't simply supplies.
It was connection.
One neighbor became three.
Three became ten.
Ten became a neighborhood choosing one another.
What began as a response to a moment in time became a movement. Today, the ripple from that first act of neighborliness continues to connect neighbors through shared experiences, meaningful acts of social goodness, and opportunities to choose one another before choosing sides.
mission & vision.
As we grew, so did our understanding: Distance isn't always measured in miles.
It's measured in missed conversations.
Misunderstandings.
Assumptions.
Judgments.
Loneliness.
The absence of opportunities to know the people around us.
Sometimes, it's simply standing on opposite sides of the street.
That's why our mission is clear:
Love Your Neighbor Project engineers proximity to overcome division.
And the future we're working toward?
A world where neighbors choose one another before choosing sides.
our philosophy.
As a grassroots, nonpolitical 501(c)(3), our work evolves with our community because the distance between neighbors is always changing.
We believe neighborhoods are not strengthened by asking everyone to think the same.
To look the same.
To believe the same.
To be the same.
They are strengthened by creating more opportunities to live alongside one another.
Not despite our differences—but because we choose to remain neighbors in the presence of them.
Because community is built in the space between us.
It's built where stories are exchanged instead of assumptions.
Where curiosity is chosen over certainty.
Where neighbors meet before judgments are made.
And even sometimes after.
Where people discover that disagreement does not have to become distance.
Love Your Neighbor Project exists to design those spaces.
Every table.
Every porch.
Every classroom.
Every conversation.
Every story.
Every act of neighborliness.
Every dollar invested.
Every experience designed.
Every difference honored.
Every neighbor invited.
We don’t engineer agreement.
We engineer the conditions where agreement is no longer required for connection.
We engineer proximity.
Because difference is inevitable.
Division is a choice.
engineering proximity.
Our story explains how we got here.
Our mission defines what we're working toward.
Our philosophy shapes what we believe.
Engineering Proximity is how we bring those beliefs to life.
It’s the framework that guides every decision we make and every experience we design with one purpose: to reduce the distance between neighbors.
It always begins with one simple idea.
We design conditions, not outcomes.
We cannot engineer friendship.
We cannot manufacture trust.
We cannot force understanding.
And we cannot expect agreement.
But we can intentionally create opportunities for neighbors to gather.
To listen.
To laugh.
To share a meal.
To hear one another's stories.
To sing and dance in unity.
To discover that the person across the street may not be as far away as they once seemed.
To remember we are all human with stories and pasts and values.
To connect.
We don't engineer agreement.
We engineer the conditions where agreement is no longer required for connection.
Because stronger communities don't simply happen by accident.
They are intentionally designed.
Every Love Your Neighbor Project initiative begins with a single question: What experience will intentionally move people toward one another?
The answer is never to convince.
It’s to connect.
We call those opportunities sandboxes.
Places where people gather around something larger than themselves.
A music festival.
A community table.
A service project.
A classroom.
A conversation.
A shared story.
The sandbox isn't the destination.
It's where neighbors discover one another.
Before we build anything, we observe. We listen to where distance exists. We understand what our community needs. Then we intentionally design experiences that help reduce that distance. Every project follows the same path.
Observe.
Listen.
Understand.
Design.
Connect.
Not every experience looks the same. The distance is always changing.
So our work must continue to evolve with it. But our purpose never does: To create opportunities for neighbors to choose one another before choosing sides.
Because when we reduce distance, connection becomes possible.
And when connection becomes possible, stronger neighborhoods begin to grow.
Around here, we call that engineering proximity. See it in action.
Welcome to the neighborhood.
#ConnectToSocialGoodness
social goodness.
so·cial
/ˈsōSH(ə)l/
adjective
1. Relating to society or the way people live, work, and connect with one another.
good·ness
/ˈgud-n(ə)s/
noun
1. the quality or state of being good
Put them together, and you get one of our favorite phrases: Social Goodness. To us, Social Goodness is everything good that happens when people choose connection. It's integrity. Kindness. Generosity. Empathy. Honesty. Grace. It's meeting neighbors where they are—not where we believe they ought to be. It's choosing curiosity before judgment. Listening before speaking. Playing (nicely) in the sandbox together. Making room for experiences that don't match our own. Standing beside a neighbor even when we don't stand on the same side of an issue. It's believing our shared humanity is always greater than our differences. And perhaps most simply... It's choosing to be a good human.
